2020 Specialized Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO Bike Review
You know when something sexy wheels itself into the room and you just can't help but notice?
Well that's what Specialized's 2020 Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO bike did here at LA Fly Rides. Our very own Hector took this gorgeous gravel grinder out for a spin, and its incredible specs astounded.
The Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO is Specialized's gravel model in their new Turbo Creo line. With features like a Future Shock 2.0 on your stem, an X-Fusion 50mm Manic Dropper seat post, 38mm Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready Tires at your disposal, the Expert EVO model is essentially the S-Work's scrappy cousin. Specialized has done a great job at crafting this bike for the gravel rider's ease and enjoyment, and there's a lot more you should know if you're interested in taking this offroad. Like perhaps the fact that it remains the lightest e-bike in its class... Read on for our breakdown.
The Specialized SL 1.1 Motor
Brace yourself. Specialized's proprietary SL 1.1 motor is extremely powerful, offering 28mph speeds with 35 Nm of torque, all at nearly half the size of a Shimano STEPS motor. Integrated seamlessly within the carbon frame alongside a 320 Wh battery, this custom motor is what helps keep the Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO as light as it is. It weighs 4.3 lbs, and is a force of nature that will make any uphill climb easy and enjoyable. Hector actually got up to 33mph on this bad boy thanks to unmatched decoupling.
What makes the Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO (and the S-Works road model) such a head-turner is that beautiful FACT 11r Carbon frame with an open road geometry. The Chameleon color shines against a Roval C38 Disc Carbon Wheel set and 38mm wide tires that give you more control on your ride, no matter the terrain you challenge. The integrated battery and motor system is so well-hidden amidst the frame and the internal routing is impeccable. Specialized opted for a minimalist cockpit with no display, which makes the body that much sleeker.
Once you hop on this model, the Adventure Gear Bars with 12 degree flare prop you up nicely against the 50mm Dropper seat post, made specifically for your off-road experience. The Future Shock 2.0 suspension with Damper, Smooth Boot, and Boost, includes a nob right at your stem- which you can tighten or loosen up- to give you the most stability at high speeds. Essentially, you have the ability to reduce fatigue and increase your speed right at your fingertips. ROAD BUMPS? Never heard of 'em.
The Specialized battery offers 320 Wh with 48 volts, charging faster than a comparable 36 volt battery. Specialized also included a 160 Wh extender on the bottle cage that will take your range from 80 miles to a combined 120 miles so you never have to stop your trek! Bike your heart out. Conquer the world.
A Shimano Derailleur with Di2 shifting and hydraulic shift breaks finish out our spec list with 11 speeds to give you the best tension for your every part of your ride.
It's gonna be a breeze. Specialized boasts a Body Geometry Power Expert Saddle, meaning this model is fit for all riders- male or female. The long wheelbase, extended fork, and low-bottom bracket help maintain stability so that you can stay "dancing on the pedals and diving into corners," as Specialized puts it. The Turbo Creo SL Expert EVO is truly a comfortable powerhouse. With all the specs Specialized has packed into this lightweight frame, your ride is dialed in at every turn. We suggest you get your own clipless pedals to keep your pride, especially if you're committing to the 120 mile range you're promised, and maybe hook up that Mission Control App on your phone for a customized display! It allows you to tune the motor to your ride preference, record your rides, and monitor the oh-so-hidden battery. For $9,000.00, we think you make a great investment in your comfort and stability in trailblazing for miles and miles to come. And we'll admire you as you speed past us in a glowing aura on a gravel road.
